Racha Island Freediving: The Complete Guide to Phuket's Best Dive Sites
Ask any experienced freediver in Phuket where they train, and the answer is almost always the same: Racha Island. Located 30 km south of Phuket, the two Racha islands โ Racha Yai (Big Racha) and Racha Noi (Small Racha) โ offer the clearest water, the best depth profiles, and the most diverse marine life accessible from Phuket's shore.
Why Racha for Freediving?
Freediving demands specific conditions that differ from scuba diving requirements. You need:
- Calm, clear water for visibility and relaxation
- Appropriate depth profiles โ ideally a sandy slope or drop-off with depths of 10โ40 m
- No strong currents during training sessions
- Minimal boat traffic in the dive zone
The Racha islands satisfy all four conditions, especially from November through May during the Andaman Sea's calm season.
Racha Yai: The Training Island
Racha Yai (also spelled Ko Racha Yai) is the larger and more accessible island. It has a small resort and several restaurants, making it comfortable for full-day training trips.
Best Freediving Sites on Racha Yai
Bay 1 (Ao Batok) โ Depth: 5โ18 m The main bay on the north side of Racha Yai. Calm, sheltered, and excellent for beginners. Sandy bottom with coral boulders. Good for Wave 1 training and warm-up dives. Visibility typically 15โ25 m.
Bay 2 (Ao Siam) โ Depth: 10โ25 m A slightly more exposed bay on the northeast side. Better depth profile for Wave 2 training. Sandy bottom at 20 m with occasional deeper ledges. Excellent for constant weight line training.
South Point (Siam Bay South Wall) โ Depth: 15โ30 m A wall dive on the south side that drops to 28โ30 m. Less visited, better suited for experienced freedivers. Strong currents possible โ always check before diving.
Typical marine life on Racha Yai: Leopard sharks resting on the sandy bottom, sea turtles, moray eels, lion fish, and dense coral gardens. The island is one of the best places in Phuket to encounter sea turtles on a freedive.
Racha Noi: The Advanced Island
Racha Noi is smaller, uninhabited, and more remote โ about 20 minutes further south by speedboat. Conditions can be rougher, and the dives are deeper and more dramatic.
Best Freediving Sites on Racha Noi
Racha Noi North โ Depth: 10โ35 m Gradual slope from 10 to 35 m with good sandy patches ideal for line training. One of the deepest accessible sites from Phuket without a long crossing.
Racha Noi East Wall โ Depth: 15โ40+ m A dramatic wall that drops beyond sport freediving depth on the east side of the island. For experienced Wave 3 freedivers and above. The wall attracts manta rays during the right season (typically JanuaryโMarch).
Racha Noi Pinnacles โ Depth: variable Underwater rock formations on the southwest side. Unusual topography with crevices and swim-throughs. More suitable for exploration than depth training.
Note on Racha Noi: Currents can be significant and change quickly. Racha Noi trips should be led by an experienced local guide who knows the site conditions.
Getting to Racha Island from Phuket
From Chalong Bay (recommended): Speedboat: 25โ35 minutes to Racha Yai, 45โ55 minutes to Racha Noi Most freediving schools depart from Chalong Pier. Early departure (7:00โ8:00 AM) avoids afternoon wind.
From Rawai Beach: Similar distance to Chalong. Private longtail boats available, but speedboats from Chalong are more reliable for early starts.
From Phuket Town / Patong: Add 30โ40 minutes road transfer to reach Chalong or Rawai. Stay near the dive sites if you plan multiple training days.
Boat options:
- School speedboat (recommended for freediving courses): เธฟ400โ600 included in course fees
- Private speedboat charter: เธฟ4,000โ8,000 for the full boat (for groups)
- Ferry (for Racha Yai only): เธฟ600โ800 return from Chalong, but schedules don't match early freediving starts
Best Time to Freedive at Racha Island
November โ April (high season): Optimal conditions. Water temperature 28โ30ยฐC, visibility 20โ30 m, minimal wind, calm seas. This is the best window for depth training and photography.
May โ October (green season): The Andaman's monsoon season. Racha Yai is often still diveable โ the islands sit in a somewhat sheltered position. Expect 1โ2 days per week unsuitable due to swell. Visibility drops to 10โ20 m but is still excellent by global standards.
Best months overall: December, January, February, March
What to See Underwater: Marine Life Guide
Sea turtles: Green turtles are resident year-round at Racha Yai. Patient, shallow freediving around the coral boulders in Bay 1 often leads to close encounters.
Leopard sharks: Rest on the sandy bottom at 12โ20 m. Approachable on a calm, controlled descent. Common at Bay 2 and the north side of Racha Noi.
Manta rays: Seasonal (JanuaryโApril) at Racha Noi. Usually in the 15โ25 m zone. A major motivation for experienced freedivers to plan trips around this window.
Eagle rays: Spotted throughout the year at both islands, often in open water at 15โ25 m.
Whale sharks: Occasional sightings, typically AprilโMay at Racha Noi. Not predictable but regularly reported.
Racha Island as a Training Base
If you're coming to Phuket specifically for a Wave 2 or Wave 3 course, your instructor will almost certainly use Racha Yai as the primary training site. The sandy slopes, calm water, and reliable depth access make it the perfect environment for line training.
What to bring on a full-day Racha trip:
- Rashguard or thin wetsuit (3mm is comfortable year-round)
- High-SPF waterproof sunscreen (applied before boarding)
- Plenty of water โ dehydration is common and affects performance
- Small snack (but avoid heavy meals 2 hours before diving)
- Motion sickness tablets if you're prone โ the crossing can be choppy in the green season
Other Notable Freediving Sites Near Phuket
While Racha is the top destination, several other sites are worth knowing:
Shark Point (Koh Dok Mai): Famous leopard shark sightings at 20 m. About 25 minutes by speedboat. Best for experienced freedivers due to current variability.
King Cruiser Wreck: An intentionally sunk ferry at 32 m. Advanced site. Requires Wave 3 level and experienced supervision.
Phi Phi Islands: 1.5โ2 hours from Phuket by speedboat. Worth the trip for a dedicated dive day. The walls at Ko Phi Phi Le reach 30+ m.
Surin Islands: A 3-hour journey north. The best manta ray and whale shark diving in Thai waters. Typically done as a 2โ3 night liveaboard.
