Best Freediving Spots in Phuket and Nearby Islands

The top freediving locations around Phuket: Racha Yai, Racha Noi, Coral Island, Khao Lak, and Krabi. Depths, visibility, marine life, seasons, and how to get there.

Best Freediving Spots in Phuket and Nearby Islands

Phuket sits at one of the richest intersections of ocean conditions on the planet. Here's where to actually dive — from beginner-friendly reefs to advanced walls that challenge even certified freedivers.

The Andaman Sea around Phuket offers an extraordinary variety of dive sites. Water temperatures stay between 28–30°C year-round, currents range from gentle to challenging, and visibility at the best sites exceeds 20–25 meters. Whether you're on your first course or pushing for 30+ meter dives, there's a spot that fits your level — and most are reachable within 1–2 hours by speedboat.

1. Racha Yai Island — The Main Training Ground

Distance from Chalong Pier: 30–40 minutes by speedboat Depth range: 5–28 meters Best for: Beginner to intermediate, Wave 1 training, recreational dives Best season: November–May (dry season, calm seas)

Racha Yai (also spelled Raya Yai) is the primary training location for most Phuket-based freediving schools, and for good reason. The island's bays offer protected, calm water even during moderate swells, with sandy-bottom training areas ideal for vertical line work.

Bay 1 (Batok Bay): The most sheltered bay on the island. A sandy bottom at 12–18 meters with scattered coral heads. Perfect for Wave 1 training dives, duck dive practice, and learning to follow a rope. Marine life includes parrotfish, lionfish, and occasional reef sharks. The safety line can be set here even in choppy conditions.

Bay 2 (Siam Bay): Slightly deeper access points, 15–22 meters. Excellent coral coverage, more fish activity. Used for intermediate training and exploration dives. The eastern edge drops to 28 meters along a gradual slope.

The Wall (north tip): A rocky wall running 10–28 meters with strong current during tidal changes. Advanced freedivers use this for negatively buoyant freefall training. Visibility is exceptional here — often 25+ meters on good days.

This is where we conduct our Wave 1 and Wave 2 open water sessions.

2. Racha Noi Island — Advanced Depths

Distance from Chalong: 60–75 minutes by speedboat Depth range: 15–50+ meters Best for: Wave 2 and above, depth training, experienced freedivers Best season: December–April only (significant swell in other months)

Racha Noi is the wilder, more exposed sister island to Racha Yai. There are no permanent resorts here — the sea conditions are too unpredictable for tourist infrastructure, which keeps it pristine. Visibility is consistently 20–30 meters.

North Tip: A dramatic underwater landscape where the reef drops sharply from 18 meters to 50+ meters. Soft corals cover the wall. Strong currents make this challenging, but on calm days it's one of the finest freediving walls in Thailand. Manta rays pass through regularly during January–March.

Crystal Bay: A protected cove on the southeast side with a sandy channel dropping to 35–40 meters. The channel acts as a natural funnel for marine life — you'll commonly see schools of trevally, barracuda, and the occasional whale shark in season (February–April).

3. Coral Island (Ko Hae) — Quick Access for Beginners

Distance from Rawai Beach: 20–25 minutes by longtail boat Depth range: 6–18 meters Best for: First dives, snorkeling transitions, Trial course dives Best season: Year-round (sheltered from most swells)

Ko Hae is the closest island to southern Phuket and easily accessible from Rawai or Chalong. It's one of the most popular tourist snorkeling spots, which means the infrastructure is excellent: clear buoy markers, boat traffic management, and calm, warm water.

The freediving potential here is often underestimated. The northern tip of the island has a wall descending to 16–18 meters with healthy hard coral. The sandy bays are perfect for static and dynamic apnea practice in open water conditions. This is where we conduct Trial course and Ocean Confidence Day sessions — calm enough for zero-experience participants, but interesting enough to be genuinely enjoyable.

4. Shark Point (Hin Musang) — Marine Life

Distance from Chalong: 45 minutes by speedboat Depth range: 16–26 meters Best for: Intermediate to advanced, wildlife encounters Best season: November–April

Shark Point is not technically a single point but a chain of three submerged pinnacles. The name comes from the leopard sharks (Stegostoma fasciatum) that rest on the sandy patches between the pinnacles. They're completely harmless — a 2-meter leopard shark sleeping at 18 meters is a remarkable sight for any freediver.

The pinnacles rise to 16 meters at their shallowest, surrounded by dense soft corals (sea fans, sea whips) and schooling fish. Current is significant here, requiring comfortable watermanship.

5. Khao Lak — Similan Islands Gateway

Distance from Phuket: 1.5–2 hours by car, then 30 min by speedboat Depth range: 8–35 meters at Similan dive sites Best for: Day trips, advanced freedivers Best season: November–April (liveaboards available)

The Similan Islands, accessible from Khao Lak, represent some of the finest diving in Southeast Asia. For freedivers, the granite boulder formations create unique swim-throughs and swimways at depths of 8–25 meters — completely different from the reef diving around Phuket.

Elephant Head Rock (Hin Pousar) at Similan #8 is a standout site: massive granite boulders with swim-throughs at 15–25 meters, strong currents, and incredible diversity. This is an advanced site requiring solid breath-hold technique and good current management.

We organize Island Retreat trips that include Similan day excursions.

6. Krabi — Dramatic Limestone Scenery

Distance from Phuket: 2 hours by ferry or 1 hour by speedboat Key spots: Koh Phi Phi, Maya Bay, Koh Poda, Bamboo Island Depth range: 8–30 meters Best for: Scenic freediving, photo dives, group trips Best season: November–April

The iconic limestone karsts of Krabi create one of the most visually dramatic freediving environments anywhere. Koh Phi Phi's dive sites combine cathedral-like underwater rock formations with healthy soft coral and clear water (15–20m visibility).

Maya Bay — made famous by The Beach — was closed for ecological restoration and has recently reopened with limited access. The underwater environment has recovered dramatically; soft corals have returned, and the fish population is thriving again.

Our Freediving Journey experience includes Krabi day trips upon request.
