So, you are ready to take your freediving to the next level. The Molchanovs education system is one of the most modern and structured freediving curriculums in the world. (Comparing agencies? See our guide to AIDA, Molchanovs, SSI and PADI certifications.)
Whether you are just starting out or aiming for elite depths, every level comes with specific physical and theoretical requirements. A common question we get from students is: "Am I fit enough to pass the exam?"
Here is the exact breakdown of the Molchanovs Wave 1, Wave 2, and Wave 3 requirements, and how you can prepare to pass your exams with confidence.
Molchanovs Wave 1 Requirements (Beginner)
The Wave 1 course is your introduction to the underwater world. The primary focus here is not pushing extreme limits, but rather learning to relax, equalize properly, and dive safely.
To earn your Wave 1 certification, you must complete the following exam requirements:
- Static Apnea (STA): 1 minute 30 seconds breath-hold floating on the surface.
- Dynamic Apnea (DYN): 30 meters underwater swimming with bifins.
- Constant Weight (CWT): Dive to a depth of 12 โ 20 meters.
- Free Immersion (FIM): Pulling yourself down the rope to 12 โ 20 meters.
- Rescue Exam: Rescue a "blacked-out" buddy from 6โ10 meters to the surface, followed by surface rescue protocols.
How to prepare: You don't need to be an athlete to pass Wave 1. The best preparation is simple relaxation. Practice doing slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing at home, and work on equalizing your ears gently (the Valsalva or Frenzel maneuver) before you even arrive at the dive center. Our dry training tips will help with the static.
Molchanovs Wave 2 Requirements (Intermediate)
The Wave 2 course is where things get serious. You will transition to the Frenzel equalization technique and learn about the "freefall"โthe point where gravity takes over and you sink effortlessly.
To pass your Wave 2 exam, the requirements are:
- Static Apnea (STA): 2 minutes 30 seconds.
- Dynamic Apnea (DYN): 50 meters with bifins.
- Dynamic No Fins (DNF): 35 meters (underwater breaststroke).
- Constant Weight (CWT & FIM): Dive to a depth of 24 โ 30 meters.
- Constant Weight No Fins (CNF): 15 meters.
- Rescue Exam: Rescue a freediver from 15 meters deep, followed by surface rescue protocols.
How to prepare: The biggest hurdle for Wave 2 students is mastering the Frenzel equalization technique. Practice your Frenzel daily using an equalization tool or balloon. Additionally, start doing CO2 tolerance tables (static apnea training) to get your body used to higher carbon dioxide levels.
Molchanovs Wave 3 Requirements (Advanced)
The Wave 3 course transforms you into an elite freediver. You will learn advanced equalization techniques like the Mouthfill, advanced stretching, and simulated deep dives (FRC dives).
The Wave 3 exam requirements are rigorous:
- Static Apnea (STA): 3 minutes 30 seconds.
- Dynamic Apnea (DYN): 70 meters with bifins, plus a no-fins dynamic.
- Constant Weight (CWT & FIM): Dive to a depth of 32 โ 40 meters.
- Constant Weight No Fins (CNF): a shallower no-fins depth dive.
- Rescue Exam: A deeper rescue from depth, followed by surface rescue protocols.
Molchanovs updates its standards from time to time, and your instructor will confirm the exact Wave 3 targets at the start of the course.
How to prepare: Wave 3 requires dedicated preparation. Work heavily on your thoracic flexibility (lung and diaphragm stretches) to handle the pressure at 40 meters without lung squeeze. You should also be doing regular dynamic pool sessions to build your lactic acid tolerance.
