Planning a freediving trip to Phuket means understanding the local weather patterns. Unlike places with four distinct seasons, Phuket essentially has two: the Dry Season (High Season) and the Green Season (Monsoon Season).
Both seasons offer excellent freediving opportunities, but they provide very different experiences. Here is your complete guide to choosing the best time for your freediving course or training trip.
The Dry Season (November to April)
The dry season is considered the peak time to visit Phuket, and for good reason. The weather is generally sunny, the seas are calm, and the winds blow from the northeast (away from the main west coast beaches).
What to Expect:
- Visibility: Peak visibility. At sites like Racha Yai and Racha Noi, you can expect 20-30 meters of crystal clear water.
- Water Temperature: A warm and comfortable 28ยฐC to 30ยฐC. You will only need a 1.5mm to 3mm wetsuit.
- Surface Conditions: Flat, glass-like surface conditions on the west coast and at the Racha islands, making it absolutely perfect for line training and deep diving.
- Marine Life: This is the best time to spot Manta Rays at Racha Noi, and Leopard Sharks are frequently sighted.
Verdict: If you are coming strictly to push depth, pass a Wave 2 or Wave 3 course, or just want the most predictable, postcard-perfect conditions, book your trip between December and March.
The Green Season (May to October)
Also known as the monsoon or low season, this period brings the southwest monsoon winds. This means the west coast of Phuket experiences larger waves and occasional heavy rain squalls.
However, freediving does not stop in the green season.
What to Expect:
- Visibility: Slightly reduced due to plankton blooms and rain runoff, but still highly diveable. Expect 10-20 meters at the offshore islands.
- Water Temperature: Remains a very warm 28ยฐC to 29ยฐC.
- Surface Conditions: The west coast beaches (Kata, Karon, Surin) become rough and are mostly used for surfing. However, our dive boats head to the east side of the islands (like Racha Yai's Bay 4 and 5), which are completely sheltered from the wind. The surface there remains calm enough for excellent training.
- Crowds & Cost: The biggest advantage of the green season! Flights and hotels are significantly cheaper, and the dive sites are delightfully uncrowded.
Verdict: If you are on a budget, don't mind occasional rain, and prefer having the dive sites to yourself, the green season is a fantastic time to train.
Year-Round Considerations
No matter when you visit Phuket, some things remain constant:
- Warm Water: You will never need a thick wetsuit. A 3mm open-cell or even a 1.5mm surf suit is plenty.
- Currents: Tidal currents affect the Andaman Sea year-round. A good freediving school (like ORO) plans their diving schedule around the moon phases to ensure slack tides for deep line training.
